Is Claude Code free for students?
No. Anthropic's own help centre states it does not offer standard discounted pricing on any paid plan, and that support cannot issue one-off discounts or coupons. Since Claude Code needs a paid plan or API credits, students pay the same $20/month as everyone else. What does exist is institutional: Claude for Education is bought by a university, not by you.

From Anthropic's article on the Pro plan: "We do not offer standard discounted pricing any of our paid plans, including Pro plans." It adds that while limited-time promotions occasionally run, there are no standing discounts available on request, and support "cannot issue one-off discounts or coupons". That covers students the same way it covers everyone else.
The second half of the answer is that Claude Code isn't sold separately — it comes with a paid Claude plan, and the same article lists "Claude Code access" among what Pro includes. So the question collapses into whether a student pays less for Pro, and the answer to that is no.
What genuinely exists sits at a different level. Claude for Education is a university-wide programme an institution buys for its students, faculty and staff — if your campus has it, your access comes through them rather than through a discount code. Alongside it Anthropic runs a Campus Ambassadors programme and offers API credits for student projects, both of which are applications rather than pricing.
So the practical move isn't hunting for a coupon; it's asking whether your institution already has a plan.

Claude for Education is sold as a university-wide plan covering students, faculty and staff. If your university has bought one, you already have access and a personal subscription would be money wasted — and if it hasn't, your department asking is a more productive route than any discount request to support.
This is the same shape as most enterprise software at universities: the institution licenses it, individuals don't.
