Is ChatGPT Pro worth it?
Rarely, and for one reason only. OpenAI states both Pro tiers include the same core capabilities as each other, and the step up from Plus is overwhelmingly about usage allowance. So Pro is worth $100 or $200 a month if Plus limits interrupt your working day, and worth nothing at all if they do not. There is no feature waiting behind the paywall.
OpenAI describes Pro in terms of allowance, and never in terms of features.
Read the Pro article looking for a capability Plus lacks and you will not find one stated. What you find instead: both Pro tiers "include the same core capabilities", the difference being 5× or 20× Plus usage; some models carry separate allowances that differ by tier; and the lower tier "includes lower usage allowances than the $200 Pro tier". Every distinction is quantitative.
That makes the buying decision unusually clean. You are not choosing between feature sets, you are buying a bigger bucket. If you do not currently empty the Plus bucket, a bigger one changes nothing about your day — and this is the single most common way people waste money on this product.
Two sentences in that article deserve to be read before purchase, because they set the ceiling honestly. "There is no setting to increase or bypass a model's usage allowance." And, under a heading of its own: "Support does not reset ChatGPT or Codex usage limits." Pro is a larger allowance with the same hard edges — reaching one is not a fault to be escalated.

The test, and the cheaper answers.
Pro is worth it when the arithmetic works, and the arithmetic is simple. If hitting a Plus limit stops paid work for an hour, and it happens most days, the upgrade is trivially justified. If it happens twice a month and costs you a coffee break, it is not.
The trap is that people upgrade on the day they hit a limit, when the limit is most annoying and least representative. OpenAI's own note is useful here: reaching an allowance shows a reset time in-product. If that reset is tomorrow morning and your deadline is next week, waiting costs nothing — and upgrading mid-cycle restarts your billing cycle, so it is the expensive way to wait.
A large share of Pro upgrades are really about coding volume rather than chat. That is a different product with a different pricing structure, and we have taken it apart properly: Codex pricing covers how usage is metered there, including the credit system that OpenAI does not publish a dollar rate for.
Worth knowing before you upgrade for this reason: the Codex allowances attached to Plus and Pro have been rebalanced more than once, and promotional multipliers have both appeared and expired. Check what the tier includes this month rather than what a blog post said it included last quarter.
If you have decided Pro is right, start at $100 rather than $200. By OpenAI's own statement you lose no capability, only headroom, and you can move up from Settings → My Plan at any time with billing adjusted automatically.
The asymmetry to plan around: upgrading is immediate and restarts the cycle, while downgrading waits until your next renewal. So the cheap direction is slow and the expensive direction is instant — start low and step up, not the other way round.
At $200 a month you are in the price band where per-token billing deserves a serious look. A subscription buys an allowance you cannot inspect, cannot raise and cannot carry over; API rates buy exactly what you consume, with no ceiling to hit mid-task.
What you give up is the interface, the apps, and the tools bundled around the model. That is not nothing — for interactive work it is most of the value.
