How much is ChatGPT Plus?

ChatGPT Plus

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month, billed monthly — OpenAI offers no annual plan and no option to pay for several months up front for Go, Plus or Pro. The subscription raises message and tool limits, unlocks the reasoning models above the free tier, and removes the advertising that now appears on Free and Go. API usage is billed entirely separately and is not included.

The number is easy. The shape of the bill is where people get caught.

OpenAI's Plus article gives the price in one line and then, further down, answers the question people actually lose money on: Is there an annual plan available?"Currently, we do not support annual billing or the option to pay for multiple months in advance." The Go and Pro articles repeat it word for word. So any page or reseller advertising a discounted ChatGPT annual plan is not describing OpenAI's product.

What Plus buys over Free, in OpenAI's own list: priority access during high-traffic periods, higher message and model limits, the reasoning options available to your account, faster responses, voice conversations, image generation, file uploads and analysis, and Deep Research where available. Plus is also ad-free — advertising appears only on Free and Go.

What it does not buy: unlimited anything. The same article notes Plus "may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand", and OpenAI's Pro article adds that support cannot reset a usage limit and there is no setting to raise or bypass one. Plus is a bigger allowance, not the removal of allowances.

Prices on this page come from our verified plan sheet, checked 2026-07-16 — the same sheet behind the subscription-vs-API calculator, so the figure here cannot drift out of step with the rest of the site when OpenAI reprices.

§ 02 / WHY

What you are actually paying for.

2.1
The model, more than the message count

The most concrete difference between Free and Plus is which model answers you. Free and Go run Think on GPT-5.6 Luna; OpenAI's Go article states outright that Go does not include GPT-5.6 Sol. Plus is where GPT-5.6 Sol starts.

If you mostly want faster, longer, more reliable chat, Go may be enough. If you want the reasoning tier for code, planning or multi-step analysis, that is the line Plus buys you across, and it is the single clearest justification for the price.

2.2
Monthly-only is a real cost, not a footnote

Most software of this price offers 15-20% off for an annual commitment. OpenAI offers none, on any consumer tier. Compare that with Anthropic, which does discount Claude Pro for annual billing — a difference our Claude vs ChatGPT page prices out.

The upside of monthly-only is symmetrical: nothing to strand. Cancel any time, keep access to the end of the period you paid for, and there is no unused annual balance to argue about. Whether that trade favours you depends entirely on whether you would have kept it for twelve months anyway.

2.3
When Plus is the wrong purchase

Three cases where paying $20 a month is the wrong answer, in order of how often we see them:

  • You use it twice a week. The free tier's everyday text chat is unlimited. If your use is light and text-shaped, you may be buying ad removal and little else.
  • You use it constantly and hit caps anyway. Then the tier is undersized and the comparison is Plus against Pro, not Plus against Free.
  • You are building something. A subscription does not include API access at all. Programmatic use is billed per token — see OpenAI's token rates.

Our subscription-vs-API calculator answers the third one with your own volume rather than a rule of thumb.

2.4
What the price does not include

Two exclusions catch people who assume a paid plan unlocks everything OpenAI makes.

Creating GPTs is no longer a personal-plan feature. OpenAI's Free-tier FAQ states that new GPT creation and publishing are unavailable on all personal accounts — Free, Go, Plus and Pro alike — and now live in Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. Existing GPTs still run.

The API is a separate bill. Every plan article repeats it. A Plus subscription and an API key are two unrelated purchases from the same company, and the token rates behind the API are the ones we track on our OpenAI pricing page.

Frequently asked.

Quick follow-ups people search after this question.

Q · 01 Is there an annual ChatGPT Plus plan? +
No. OpenAI states in three separate plan articles that it does not support annual billing or paying for multiple months in advance, for Go, Plus or Pro. Anything advertising a discounted ChatGPT annual subscription is not selling OpenAI's product.
Q · 02 Does ChatGPT Plus include API access? +
No. Every plan article says the same thing: API usage is separate and billed independently. A subscription pays for the ChatGPT apps; programmatic access is billed per token, which we track on our OpenAI pricing page.
Q · 03 Is ChatGPT Plus unlimited? +
No. OpenAI describes Plus as carrying usage limits including message caps, particularly during high demand, and states elsewhere that support cannot reset a limit and no setting raises it. Plus is a larger allowance, not the absence of one.
Q · 04 Does the price change by country? +
The figure here is the US web-subscription list price. OpenAI bills in USD by default and offers local-currency billing in a limited set of countries, and buying through the App Store or Play Store can differ again. Check your own checkout before assuming.
Q · 05 What is the cheapest paid ChatGPT plan? +
ChatGPT Go, at $8/mo, available in every country ChatGPT supports. It keeps unlimited everyday text chats and raises tool limits over Free, but does not include GPT-5.6 Sol or legacy models.
