Is ChatGPT free?
Yes. ChatGPT has a genuine free tier — no trial period, no card, unlimited everyday text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna. The catch is newer than most guides admit: since February 2026 the Free plan carries ads in a growing list of countries, and the ad-free alternative OpenAI offers on Free is fewer messages and no image generation. Paying $20 removes both compromises.
OpenAI's own Free-tier FAQ opens with four words: ChatGPT is free to use.
The Free Tier FAQ lists what a free account gets: GPT-5.6 Luna, web search, data analysis, image and file uploads, image creation, access to existing GPTs, and Library with 500 MB of storage. Text chat is described as unlimited, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards; the tools around it — file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis — each carry their own separate limit, and ChatGPT tells you in-product when one is reached.
The part worth reading twice is the ads FAQ. Ads began testing in the US on February 9, 2026 and appear only on Free and Go; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not get them, and neither do accounts identified as belonging to under-18s. OpenAI states that advertisers receive no chats, no memories and no personal details, and that ads do not influence answers.
Then comes the trade nobody quotes. OpenAI offers an Ads-Free switch on the Free plan itself — and it is not free of charge in the way it sounds. Turning ads off lowers your message limits and removes tools such as image generation and deep research. So the honest shape of the free tier in 2026 is a choice between two versions of Free, plus a paid escape hatch that has neither compromise.
One more absence, because it changes what people mean by "free": creating new GPTs is no longer available on any personal account — Free, Go, Plus or Pro. That capability now lives in Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. Existing GPTs still run.
What free actually buys in 2026.
The headline is accurate: you can talk to ChatGPT all day without paying. The limits live one layer down, on the tools:
- Data analysis — its own cap, separate from chat.
- File and image uploads — their own cap.
- Image generation — its own cap.
Hit one and that tool pauses until it resets; the chat itself keeps going. This is why "ChatGPT is free" and "ChatGPT stopped letting me upload things" are both true statements from the same account on the same afternoon.
Storage is the quieter ceiling. Free accounts get 500 MB of Library storage against 20 GB on Plus, and that pool holds both what you upload and what ChatGPT creates for you.
This is the genuinely new thing, and it is the reason a 2025 answer to this question is now wrong.
The default Free experience in participating regions is ad-supported: sponsored units appear below a response, labelled, on separate systems from the model. OpenAI is explicit that advertisers see aggregate views and clicks and nothing else — not your chats, chat history, memories, name, email, IP or precise location — and that no data is sold to them. Ads are also barred from appearing near personal health, mental health or political conversations, and Temporary Chats show none at all.
The alternative is Ads-Free on Free, in Settings → Ads controls. It removes ads and, in OpenAI's own description, gives you fewer messages per day and no access to tools like images. If you hit a limit there, the in-product banner offers you two ways out: upgrade, or switch ads back on.
Read plainly, that is a price. It is just denominated in usage rather than dollars.
The free tier is the correct choice for most people who ask this question, and we would rather say so than upsell. It stops being correct at three specific moments:
- You need the reasoning model. Free and Go run Think on GPT-5.6 Luna; GPT-5.6 Sol is a Plus-and-above model, and ChatGPT Go explicitly does not include it.
- You keep hitting tool caps. If image generation or file analysis is the job rather than a novelty, the metered tools are what you are actually buying.
- You want neither ads nor reduced limits. That combination only exists on a paid plan.
If your use is heavy and technical, the comparison worth running is not Free against Plus but subscription against per-token API billing — our subscription-vs-API calculator does that on the same verified rates the rest of this site uses.
A recurring shape of this question is does ChatGPT have a free trial. OpenAI documents no trial of Plus or Pro, and there is nothing to expire — the free tier is permanent and is where most of the world uses the product.
What that means practically: you never have to remember to cancel anything, and any page telling you to "start your ChatGPT free trial" through a third party is selling you something else. If you want to stop paying for a plan you already have, the mechanics are on our cancellation page, including the 24-hour rule that catches people out.
Assistants whose free tier is still just free.
Each of these runs a free tier without advertising as of the dates on those pages. We have not benchmarked answer quality between them — the point here is the billing model, not which one writes better. Limits change often, so check the vendor before committing a workflow.
