How to delete your ChatGPT history
- One chat In the sidebar, hover the conversation, click the three dots (
⋯) next to its title, choose Delete, and confirm. It disappears from your view immediately. - All of them Settings → Data controls holds the bulk actions: delete all chats, or archive all chats. Note that these apply to every conversation, including those inside projects — there is no "except my projects" option.
- Never save it Use Temporary Chat for anything you would only delete afterwards. It is not saved to your history, creates no memories, is not used to train models, and is deleted after 30 days. Files uploaded in a Temporary Chat are not saved to Library either.
Archive and delete look like neighbours in the menu. They are not the same action.
Archiving hides; deleting removes. OpenAI's article is unambiguous: archived chats remain in your account under standard retention, and archiving does not delete them. They live in Settings → Data controls → Archived Chats, where you can unarchive or finally delete them. If you archived things believing you had cleared your history, they are all still there.
Deletion is immediate on your side and 30 days on theirs. A deleted chat leaves your history view at once and is scheduled for permanent removal from OpenAI's systems within 30 days — unless it was already de-identified and disassociated from your account, or must be retained for security or legal obligations. There is no undo: OpenAI states deleted chats are not retrievable through the interface, the APIs, or support.
Connected app data follows the conversation, not the connection. This is the part that surprises people who use the Google Drive, Gmail or Calendar integrations. Disconnecting an app stops future access but does not delete conversations that already used that data. Deleting the conversation removes both the chat and the synced app data retained inside it. So the order matters: to remove connected app data from your account, delete the conversations that referenced it.
One practical note from the same article, for the case where history looks wiped but you did not wipe it: check Archived Chats first, confirm you are in the right account or workspace, and check status.openai.com for an incident, because an outage can hide history that is perfectly intact.
What "deleted" means here.
People arrive at this question wanting one of three different things, and deleting chats only achieves the first:
- History — the conversations in your sidebar. Deleting removes them.
- Memory — what ChatGPT has remembered about you across chats. That lives in Settings → Personalization and survives a history purge unless you clear it there.
- Training — whether your conversations improve OpenAI's models. That is the "Improve the model for everyone" toggle in Data Controls, and turning it off is not retroactive.
Deleting every chat while leaving memory and training untouched is a common and unsatisfying outcome. If your real question is the third one, read whether ChatGPT chats are private.
Every deletion route in ChatGPT lands on the same number: within 30 days. Deleted chats, Temporary Chats, ads data, an entire deleted account — all 30 days, with the same carve-out for data OpenAI must retain for security or legal reasons.
What that means in practice: deletion is a real commitment on OpenAI's side rather than a UI trick, but it is not instantaneous, and no amount of clicking accelerates it. If your threat model needs the conversation never to exist rather than to stop existing next month, the tool for that is Temporary Chat, used up front.
The one-line warning in OpenAI's article deserves more prominence than it gets: the bulk actions in Data controls apply to all conversations including those contained within projects.
If you have organised months of work into projects and you use Delete all chats to clear an unrelated mess, the projects' conversations go too — and, per the same article, deleted chats including those removed with Delete all chats cannot be restored. Archive the things you want to keep first, or delete individually.
Ways to not create the history.
Deleting is a cure. These three are prevention, and they are the right answer if what you actually want is for the conversation never to be stored in the first place. All are OpenAI's own documented controls, not workarounds.
