Can ChatGPT generate images?

Yes.
All tiers including Free · separately metered

Yes, on every plan including Free. ChatGPT Images 2.0 creates images from a prompt and edits existing ones — including images you upload — with a selection tool for changing one region and a picker for aspect ratio. Image generation is metered separately from chat, so it can pause while your conversation continues. OpenAI publishes no per-tier image counts.

Generation is universal; the interesting part is editing.

OpenAI's Images article, updated the day before we read it, states that ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available on all tiers — there is no paywall on making a picture. "Images with thinking", where the model plans and refines before generating, is the paid addition, available on Plus, Pro and Business with Enterprise and Edu to follow.

Editing is where the current product is more capable than its reputation. You can upload an existing image and describe a change; you can open an editor and use a selection tool to highlight a region, then describe what should happen there; and you can re-render at a different aspect ratio from a picker. OpenAI is upfront about the rough edge: highlights are not always precise, and edits may extend beyond the area you selected.

One retirement to act on. The official DALL·E GPT is being retired from ChatGPT on August 30, 2026 — nine days after this page was published — and OpenAI advises downloading any images you want to keep before then. Image generation itself continues through ChatGPT Images, and user-created GPTs with image generation enabled are unaffected.

On the question people actually type second — how many — OpenAI publishes no number for any tier. What it publishes is the structure: image creation is one of the tools metered separately from chat, with its own allowance that pauses when spent while everything else keeps working. Generation "may take a few minutes" for complex requests, and you can keep using ChatGPT while it runs.

§ 02 / WHY

Where the real limits are.

2.1
The allowance, and why nobody can tell you the number

Every version of "how many images can I generate on Free / on Plus" runs into the same wall: OpenAI does not publish it. The Free-tier FAQ names image creation as one of the tools with a limit separate from chat, and says ChatGPT will notify you when you reach it. Go raises the ceiling; Plus raises it further. No tier is stated in numbers.

We would rather leave a gap here than fill it. Numbers circulating for this were true of an older product and are repeated because the question demands a figure — which is exactly how a stale number outlives the thing it described.

2.2
Storage is the limit you will actually meet

Generated images count against your Library storage along with everything you upload: 500 MB on Free, 4 GB on Go, 20 GB on Plus and Business, 100 GB on Pro. On Free especially, a habit of generating images fills that quietly.

Housekeeping worth knowing: generated images appear in the Images tab, files stay in Library until deleted, and you manage space in Settings → Storage. Deleting an image from your library means deleting the conversation it was created in.

2.3
What it is not good at

The honest weaknesses are the same ones that have dogged this class of tool, and OpenAI's own image-input limitations list is a good guide to where the model's visual understanding is shaky — which is a fair proxy for where generated output will disappoint. Text in non-Latin scripts, precise spatial arrangement, graphs where meaning is carried by line style or colour, and anything requiring exact counts.

The editor's own caveat is the practical one: selections are approximate, and an edit can leak outside the region you highlighted. Plan on iterating rather than expecting a surgical result first time.

2.4
If you want images by API rather than by chat

Generating images programmatically is a different purchase entirely. A subscription includes no API access at any tier, so a script that generates images is billed per call at OpenAI's published rates regardless of which plan you hold.

That is usually the right route for volume: no allowance to exhaust, no interface in the way, and costs you can model in advance. Our subscription-vs-API calculator covers where the crossover sits for your workload.

Frequently asked.

Quick follow-ups people search after this question.

Q · 01 Can free users generate images in ChatGPT? +
Yes. OpenAI states ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available on all tiers, and the Free-tier FAQ lists creating images among the free capabilities. Free accounts hit the separate image allowance sooner, and it is not published as a number.
Q · 02 How many images can I generate on ChatGPT Plus? +
OpenAI does not publish a figure for any tier. Image creation is one of the tools metered separately from chat, with an allowance that pauses that feature while your conversation continues. ChatGPT tells you in-product when you reach it.
Q · 03 Can ChatGPT edit an image I already have? +
Yes — upload it and describe the change, or open the editor and use the selection tool to target one area. OpenAI notes that highlights are not always precise and edits can extend past the region you selected, so expect to iterate.
Q · 04 What happened to DALL·E? +
The official DALL·E GPT is being retired from ChatGPT on August 30, 2026, and OpenAI recommends downloading images you want to keep before then. Image generation continues through ChatGPT Images; user-created GPTs with image generation enabled are not affected.
Q · 05 Why does image generation take so long? +
Because the request is complex. OpenAI's own documentation says generation may take a few minutes depending on complexity, and notes you can keep using ChatGPT while it works — the wait does not block the rest of the session.
