The replacement path is Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99/month, which folds the AI into a full Microsoft 365 subscription with the Office apps and up to 6 TB of storage. The practical consequence is that Microsoft no longer sells AI on its own to consumers — every consumer tier is an Office subscription with an AI entitlement attached.

Gemini's, mostly because you can tell what it is. Google's free tier runs Gemini 3.6 Flash with limited access to 3.1 Pro, and includes Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, image and video generation and 15 GB of storage. Microsoft's free Copilot is capable — Smart mode, Vision, Voice, Search, Deep Research and image creation — but names no model at any point, so you cannot compare its answers against a known system or reproduce them later. Both are usable daily; only one is auditable.

Yes, and the comparison is closer than the headline suggests. At $19.99, Microsoft 365 Premium carries up to 6 TB shared across as many as six people, while Google AI Pro carries 5 TB. Lower down, Google AI Plus at $4.99 includes 400 GB and Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 includes 1 TB. If storage is the real reason you are subscribing, price the terabytes first and treat the assistant as the bonus — that is genuinely how both bundles are constructed.

On Google, yes; on Microsoft, no. Google AI Plus benefits can be shared with up to five other family members, so a $4.99 plan covers a household. Microsoft 365 Family at $12.99 covers six people for apps and storage, but its documentation is explicit that the AI features belong to the subscription owner and cannot be shared. For a family that wants the assistant rather than the storage, the cheaper Google plan covers more people than the more expensive Microsoft one.

Because one side will not say what it runs. Neutral leaderboards score models, and Microsoft does not disclose the model behind consumer Copilot — its documentation describes modes, an undisclosed share of traffic goes to Microsoft's own MAI models, and where it does disclose, on the work-focused Microsoft 365 Copilot, the preferred model is GPT-5.6. Gemini is Google's own model and is scored everywhere. Charting a named model against an unnamed router would invent a comparison nobody has run.
