Microsoft Copilot vs ChatGPT — which assistant actually wins in 2026?

No — and this is the single most common mix-up in this search. Microsoft Copilot is the consumer assistant at copilot.microsoft.com, built into Windows and the Microsoft 365 apps. GitHub Copilot is a separate Microsoft product that writes code inside an editor, with its own plans and its own licensing. They share a name and almost nothing else. A third thing called Copilot also exists: Microsoft 365 Copilot, the work-tenant product sold per seat, which is related to the consumer assistant but priced and governed separately.

Because an honest one cannot be built, and a dishonest one is worse than none. Microsoft does not disclose what runs consumer Copilot: its support page documents modes — Quick response, Think Deeper, Study and learn, Smart, Search — and names a model exactly once, saying Smart mode runs on GPT-5. Think Deeper is described only as using the latest reasoning models from OpenAI. Microsoft's own article about GPT-5 in Copilot now carries a note that it has since been upgraded to newer models, without naming them, on top of real-time model routing. An undisclosed share of Copilot traffic also goes to Microsoft's in-house MAI models. Where Microsoft does disclose — the work-focused Microsoft 365 Copilot — GPT-5.6 became the preferred model on July 9, 2026, which is the same family ChatGPT runs, so a fair chart would show two identical bars. No neutral leaderboard scores Microsoft Copilot as an entity: llm-stats and Artificial Analysis score models and coding agents, not routers. It depends what you are buying. For AI alone, ChatGPT is cheaper at the bottom: $8/mo Go against Microsoft's cheapest AI-bearing consumer plan, Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99/mo. Around $20 the answer flips — $19.99 Microsoft 365 Premium includes the desktop Office apps and up to 6 TB of storage alongside Copilot, while $20 ChatGPT Plus is AI only. Above that, only ChatGPT sells more: $100 and $200 Pro tiers, where Microsoft's consumer ladder simply stops. Microsoft withdrew it. Copilot Pro, the standalone consumer AI subscription, is no longer available for purchase, and existing subscriptions run only until support ends on August 1, 2026. Its features were folded into Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99/mo, which bundles them with the full desktop Office apps and up to 6 TB of storage. The practical effect is that Microsoft no longer sells consumers an AI-only plan at any price — every paid Copilot tier is a Microsoft 365 subscription with AI attached.

Effectively neither, at consumer level. OpenAI discontinued Sora: the app and web experience closed on April 26, 2026 and the API follows on September 24, 2026, so there is no video generation in any ChatGPT plan. Microsoft does have AI video creation, but it lives in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app's Create experience and routes through Clipchamp, which an administrator has to enable — it is a work-tenant feature, not something you get at copilot.microsoft.com. Both still generate images: Copilot Imagine on one side, image generation with Thinking on the other.

Both do by default on consumer plans, and both let you turn it off. In Copilot the control is under your profile, Privacy > Training on conversation activity; Microsoft notes that opting out does not exclude your conversations from general product improvement, advertising, safety, security or compliance uses. ChatGPT lists an opt-out on Free, Go, Plus and Pro alike, and its Business and Enterprise plans do not train on workspace data at all. Copilot's work product is governed by your Microsoft 365 tenant terms rather than the consumer settings. Confirm the current wording on each vendor's privacy page before rolling either out — these policies move.

That is a defensible answer and costs less than it looks. Consumer Copilot is free, so if you already run Windows you have it whether you use it or not — keep it for screen-aware questions, in-document work if you hold a Microsoft 365 subscription, and quick lookups. Pay for ChatGPT where its advantages are structural rather than cosmetic: model choice, published context windows, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks and the API. The combination that wastes money is paying for both Microsoft 365 Premium and ChatGPT Plus while only using one of them for real work — pick which one holds your documents first, then decide.
