Training bills dataset tokens × epochs, every run. The comparison is the same base model without tuning, sent the extra prompt tokens on every request — the trade fine-tuning actually makes. Set saved tokens to 0 to see the pure premium of a tuned endpoint.

Managed fine-tuning

Your workload on every managed model

The scenario configured above, priced on all 14 models. "vs prompting" is the first-year cost of the untuned base model with your saved prompt tokens added, minus the tuned model's first year — positive means fine-tuning wins. Rows keep the default order; numbers recompute live.

Rates per 1M tokens. Vertex base rates are Google Cloud's Global-endpoint list; OpenAI base rates come from our model catalog (dated per row, linked). "Run pays back" is one training run divided by the monthly saving against prompting — "never" when the tuned model costs more to run. Bedrock rows include $1.95/mo storage in "Tuned / mo".

How it works

The math behind the ranking

Every rate is a pay-as-you-go list price from the vendor's own page, dated. The engine prices two paths for the same year and the same traffic:

training_tokens = examples × tokens_per_example × epochs
per_run         = training_tokens × training_rate ÷ 1M

/* fine-tune */
tuned/mo        = requests × (input × tuned_in + output × tuned_out) ÷ 1M + storage
first_year      = runs_per_year × per_run + 12 × tuned/mo

/* keep prompting the base model */
prompted/mo     = requests × ((input + saved) × base_in + output × base_out) ÷ 1M
vs_prompting    = 12 × prompted/mo − first_year        /* > 0: fine-tuning wins */
run_pays_back   = per_run ÷ (prompted/mo − tuned/mo)

Not modeled: batch inference discounts, cached-input rates, provisioned throughput, validation tokens and per-job minimums on managed APIs, reinforcement fine-tuning billed by the hour, and the quality difference between a tuned model and a prompted one — the reason you'd fine-tune in the first place. Amazon rates are the US East list, read from the AWS Price List API.

Before you train

What the training price doesn't tell you

01
OpenAI is closing self-serve fine-tuning

New organizations lost access on May 7, 2026; organizations without recent fine-tuned inference on July 2, 2026. From January 6, 2027 nobody can start a new training job. Tuned models keep serving until their base model is retired — so a model you train now has a shelf life, and the next retrain happens somewhere else.

02
The real alternative is a longer prompt

Fine-tuning mostly buys back prompt tokens: the instructions and examples you'd otherwise send with every request. That's why the calculator prices the base model with those tokens added. At low traffic the prompt is cheaper than the training; at high traffic the tuned model wins — the "prompt tokens saved" field moves the line.

03
Tuned endpoints often cost more per token

OpenAI bills a tuned model 1.5–2× its base input rate. On Vertex, tuned Gemini 3 endpoints bill 1.5× the base model while tuned Gemini 2.5 keeps the base price. Amazon bills custom Nova models at the base rate but adds $1.95 a month per model for storage.

04
Epochs and retrains multiply the training bill

Training tokens are dataset tokens × epochs, billed on every run. Three epochs triple the bill; retraining quarterly quadruples the year. A one-off training job is rare — set "training runs / year" to how often your data actually changes.

05
Open-weight training is cheap; serving is the bill

Training an 8B model on Fireworks starts at $0.50 per 1M tokens, and Fireworks serves LoRA fine-tunes at the base model's price. Together prices training per model, then hosts the tuned model on a dedicated endpoint billed by the minute for as long as it runs — a fixed monthly cost no per-token table shows.

Fine-tuning pricing — answered.

The questions this calculator exists for, answered with the current numbers. Every figure recomputes when a vendor reprices.

Q · 01 How much does it cost to fine-tune GPT-4.1? +
Training costs $25.00 per 1M training tokens for gpt-4.1, $5.00 for gpt-4.1-mini and $3.00 for gpt-4o-mini. The tuned model then bills $3.00 / $12.00 per 1M input / output tokens, against $2.00 / $8.00 for the base model. Only existing fine-tuning customers can still train — see the next answer.
Q · 02 Is OpenAI shutting down fine-tuning? +
Its self-serve platform is being wound down. Per OpenAI's deprecations page: no access for new organizations since May 7, 2026, none for organizations without fine-tuned inference in the previous 60 days since July 2, 2026, and no new training jobs for anyone from January 6, 2027. Existing tuned models keep serving until their base model is retired.
Q · 03 How much does Gemini fine-tuning cost? +
On Vertex AI, supervised fine-tuning costs Gemini 3.5 Flash $10.00, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite $3.00, Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite $3.00, Gemini 2.5 Pro $25.00, Gemini 2.5 Flash $5.00 and Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite $1.50 per 1M training tokens. Tuned Gemini 3 endpoints bill 1.5× the base model; tuned Gemini 2.5 models bill the base price.
Q · 04 How much does it cost to fine-tune Llama? +
Per 1M training tokens — Llama 3.1 8B: Together AI LoRA $0.34, Together AI Full $0.38, Fireworks AI LoRA $0.50, Fireworks AI Full $1.00, Vertex AI SFT $0.67. Llama 3.3 70B: Together AI LoRA $2.03, Together AI Full $2.24, Fireworks AI LoRA $3.00, Fireworks AI Full $6.00, Vertex AI SFT $6.72. For this page's default dataset (6M training tokens) that's $3.00–$40.32 per run across both sizes. Serving the result is a separate bill.
Q · 05 How much does fine-tuning on Amazon Bedrock cost? +
Nova customization costs Nova Micro $1.00, Nova Lite $2.00, Nova 2 Lite $3.78 and Nova Pro $8.00 per 1M training tokens, plus $1.95 per custom model per month for storage. On-demand inference on a custom Nova model bills the same per-token rate as the base model.
Q · 06 Is fine-tuning cheaper than prompting? +
Only with enough traffic. For this page's default workload — 100K requests a month, each saving 1,500 prompt tokens, retrained 4 times a year — fine-tuning comes out ahead on 12 of 14 models. At the pilot profile's 5K requests a month it wins on 0 of 14; the calculator shows the year-one difference for every model.
Q · 07 How are fine-tuning training tokens counted? +
Dataset tokens × epochs. 2,000 examples of 1,000 tokens trained for 3 epochs is 6M training tokens. Together also counts validation tokens and charges a minimum per job (from $4). Every run bills again — a quarterly retrain is four training bills a year.
Q · 08 What does running a fine-tuned model cost? +
It depends on the platform. OpenAI's tuned models bill 1.5–2× the base input rate; Vertex bills tuned Gemini 3 at 1.5× and Gemini 2.5 at the base price; Bedrock bills custom Nova at the base rate plus storage; Fireworks serves LoRA fine-tunes at base-model prices; Together hosts them on dedicated endpoints billed by the minute.
